Many people focus on the inner child - the part of you that craves love, security and recognition. But fewer people realise that the shadow is just as important. The shadow includes the parts of yourself that you have unconsciously repressed or denied – not only your pain, but also your power.

Many of our recurring patterns and struggles originate in these unconscious parts:

  • Your inner child carries old emotional wounds – often caused by experiences in which you did not feel seen, heard or safe. This can manifest itself in fear of rejection, insecurity or the search for confirmation outside of yourself.
  • Your shadow consists of aspects of yourself that you have hidden away – characteristics, emotions or desires that you have suppressed out of fear of not being accepted. This can manifest itself in self-sabotage, survival mechanisms or projection onto others.

 

Subconsciously, these parts guide your choices, emotions and relationships. Perhaps you keep getting stuck in the same dynamics, experience emotional ups and downs, or feel that ‘something is missing’ in yourself.

 

The answer does not lie in endlessly digging for the past, but in awareness and integration.
